A Fine Day for Fine Arts at the Georgia Museum of Art
The Georgia Museum of Art, located at the University of Georgia right here in Athens, is one of our state’s premier cultural gems. As with any great gallery, its permanent collections comprise paintings, sculpture, photography, ceramics, and more from all over the world. However, those of us who were born and bred in the Peach State are particularly proud of the museum’s expansive collection of specifically Southern decorative arts, which include pottery, silver, furniture, and various textiles. Special summer exhibitions currently on view include The Past Is Never Dead: Kristin Casaletto, which deals with themes of identity and race in the South from the perspective of one of Georgia’s finest printmakers, as well as Modern Living: Giò Ponti and the 20th-Century Aesthetics of Design, a tribute to the famed Italian architect and industrial designer. The museum is open every day except Monday, and admission is always free.
